Hemp Seed Benefits
Hemp is not just a nutrition powerhouse; it can preserve the Earth and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
The environmental benefits of hemp cultivation are exciting and far-reaching.
Reduces carbon emissions
Carbon sequestration is the process by which a plant absorbs excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it; effectively, it is how plants purify the air. All plants do this, but some are faster and more effective at it. For example, hemp plants are fast-growing and mature in 90-100 days, compared with pine trees, which take 20 years to mature. This rapid growth rate means that hemp plants capture approximately 10 times more carbon dioxide than pine trees.
Potential fuel
Preliminary research indicates that hemp seed oil can be converted into a sustainable biodiesel fuel, while the rest of the plant can be used to make ethanol, another form of fuel, two important new developments which have the potential to significantly reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Biodiesel fuels are better for the environment and create less greenhouse gas emissions.
Soil doctor
Hemp is not just nutritious for humans, it also supports regenerative farming practice by improving soil fertility. A hardy plant, hemp requires less fertiliser and water than many other crops. This hardiness means hemp can be grown almost anywhere, making it a cash-producing crop that can be cultivated in disadvantaged countries with limited water and agricultural services. It is also deep-rooted, which means it aids in crop rotation by creating a loose, friable soil, and reduces erosion.
Multi-tasking miracle
Every single part of the hemp plant is useable – roots, seeds, flowers, fruit, fibre and leaves – and for an enormous variety of applications. For example, hemp can be used to make fabric, textiles, paper, cardboard and rope, plus steel, wood and bioplastic alternatives, and even a fire-resistant form of bricks to build houses. Hemp building materials are high in insulation capability, meaning they also have the advantage of greatly reducing energy consumption in future buildings.
Healthy hemp
Hemp seeds are a great source of plant-based protein, making them an excellent choice for vegetarians and vegans looking to meet their protein needs. They’re also abundant in essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3 and omega-6, which are crucial for maintaining heart health, reducing inflammation, and supporting brain function. They are high in fibre, so ideal for a healthy gut and packed with vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E, magnesium and phosphorus, which contribute to immune support, bone strength, and overall wellbeing.
